How to Keep Your Dog Cool This Summer – Tips, Tricks, and What to Avoid

While summer can be a great time to have some fun in the sun, it’s also important to remember that keeping our best fur-riends safe and comfortable is also a priority. Dogs are more sensitive to heat than we are. So, if you’re feeling the heat outside, then keep in mind that your pups will be, too.

We’re here to share our best tips for having fun with your dog this summer while also staying cool and safe! Let’s get started:

1. Visit an indoor dog park!

Dogs of Tucson is our only local indoor dog park, with plenty of grr-eat options for summer fun. With a membership, you can come play and socialize with your pup anytime! They also host a ton of special events to give you something new to do all the time.

2. Go for a swim at a dog-friendly lake or pool.

This is a great way to cool off when you’re outside this summer! If your dog loves the water, then just make sure that they can swim before letting them loose and keep an eye on them while they’re in the water for safety. While we’re talking about water safety, consider getting your dog a leptospirosis vaccine! This bacterial infection can be passed to dogs through water, so protect your fur babies before your summer fun.

3. Sign your dog up for doggie daycare!

Dogs of Tucson also offers doggie daycare at their indoor facility, including plenty of playtime, affection, and fun enrichment from their professional rufferees. This is a paw-fect way to keep your dog happy, well-exercised, and comfortable during the day while you’re at work.

3. Pack well for other outdoor adventures.

Whether you’re spending time in your yard, on a walk, or going for a hike, make sure to pack for your dog’s comfort! We’d recommend dog shoes to protect their paw pads from hot surfaces, plenty of water and a bowl they can use.

While you’re spending quality time with your four legged friend this summer, please be sure to watch out for their safety. Spend some time in the shade, watch out for signs that they’re dehydrated or overheating, and don’t ever leave them alone in a hot car. We hope you’ll have lots of fun together this season!

What our clients are saying.

  • I recommend 100% the service provided by Working For Wags. I found my 16-year-old cat well and relaxed when I returned from vacation. Frankie made it easy to arrange for someone responsible to attend to all his needs with lots of TLC. I received texts and pictures daily. I would hear back quickly if I had questions or needed to change some of the instructions already given. All my gratitude for their outstanding care.

  • I'd give them 10 stars if I could! The sitters are wonderful!! They are true animal lovers, and I trust them fully. One of my dogs has epilepsy, so finding sitters comfortable with the risk of a seizure can be tough. But, they came fully prepared and knowledgeable about what to do. If you love your dogs like I do, I highly recommend them!! 🐕💙

  • Justeen watched our cat for 5 days while we were gone for an extra long weekend. She also watered our plants and took the trash out even though we had forgotten to ask. When we came back our cat, who can be withdrawn after we've been away, acted like we had only been gone a couple of hours. We're very happy to have found this company.

  • We had a great first experience with Working for Wags! They came to our house to feed our two pups for several days while we were on vacation. Following their visits, they sent us updates by text and pictures by email, both which were greatly appreciated. They also helped us try to troubleshoot some odd behavior from our dogs, which turned out to be related to a smoke alarm that required battery replacement and was scaring the pups. Overall, we had a very positive experience and will definitely use Working for Wags again when we are out of town. :-)

  • Angela did such an awesome job with our dogs! This was the first time we have left our dogs in a very long time due to 2 of the 3 being elderly and needing extra care. Angela was very attentive to their needs. We never had to worry about how they were doing because she would send updates via texts with pictures several times a day. Angela also brought up the mail and took care of garbage. I think the house was cleaner when we came home than when we left. I would not hesitate to have Angela back to watch out furry babies.
