Moving with Your Pet – How to Keep Them Comfortable and Safe

Moving can be a difficult process, however, with pets this can be even more complicated. Making a move with your animal best friend requires more planning and thought to ensure their comfort, well-being, and more. Not only is the initial process more complex, but they’ll also need help transitioning between your current home and the new one.

Here are some helpful steps to consider before your move:

1. Visit your vet
You’ll want to visit your vet before moving in order to get your pet up-to-date and collect all necessary paperwork, like their current rabies vaccination certificate. This is also a great chance to check on any other needed vaccinations or tests, and refill your supply of any medications and preventives.

If your pet has a medical condition, you may also want to request an exam, get a blood test, or set up any surgeries or procedures before your move, as well. This will help you get ahead of their care, so you hopefully won’t need to worry during the move.

2. Research the rules and regulations
There are plenty of things you’ll need to know going into your move. For instance, if you’re using an airline or hotels, you’ll want to ensure your pet will be allowed and that you’re following their rules. If you’re moving states or out of the country, then there may be even more rules that apply– for instance, you may need a health certificate or more vaccinations.

3. Get your pet comfortable with their crate or carrier
Traveling can be stressful, especially for your pet. Getting them adjusted to spending time in their crate or carrier can help not only for plane rides, but also for when they need to be kept safely away from box cutters, cleaning products, electrical cords, garbage, and more. You may want to try giving them treats and toys during crate time so that they create a positive association.

4. Move your pets into your new home last
This keeps them safe while you’re cleaning, moving boxes and furniture, and getting everything settled. This can also reduce the amount of stress they feel while you make the new space feel cozy. When you first introduce your pet to your new home, you’ll want it to feel safe, comfortable, and inviting.

5. Give your pet time to adjust
When you first introduce your pet to your new place, they may need time and patience to get comfortable. They may feel nervous or scared during this transition, so give them time to explore and get comfortable with your supervision. You may want to focus on introducing them to one or two rooms at a time, if they’re especially nervous.

6. Find new pet care
Once you’re settled into your new home, then focus on finding the new pet care services you’ll need locally. Start by finding a vet first and scheduling their first appointment, then you can focus on finding a nearby dog groomer, daycare, pet sitter, and more! You’ll also want to update the information on your pet’s tags and microchip while you’re working on this step.

After you’ve gone through all of these steps, it’s time for you and your pet to work on establishing your new normal. Whatever your routine is, don’t forget to include them in it! Find ways to spend quality time with them and introduce them to new things– a new walking path, your new backyard, new furniture to cuddle in, everything.

  • Kristy was fantastic! My pets (dogs and cats) quickly warmed up to her and seemed to really feel comfortable with her (and the other sitter that visited too). I have one EXTRA nervous dog and I was shocked how quickly he warmed up to her. I got frequent updates about my pets and pictures even (which made me so happy and get to see how comfortable my pets were). It 100% put my mind as ease knowing my pets were in such good hands. Would definitely recommend.

  • Justeen watched our cat for 5 days while we were gone for an extra long weekend. She also watered our plants and took the trash out even though we had forgotten to ask. When we came back our cat, who can be withdrawn after we've been away, acted like we had only been gone a couple of hours. We're very happy to have found this company.

  • We’re so incredibly happy to have found a company and truly genuine people to watch our dogs. We have 3 dogs and we’ve never been able to travel without them unless a family member could help out. Ali, with Working for Wags, was the most incredible sitter! She watched them overnight for 4 nights and even spent a little extra time with them the day we were flying back in. She also helped with a very last minute house issue, which saved the day! The entire process was super professional and friendly, communication was seamless, and we will only be using Working for Wags, moving forward. A huge shout out to Ali!

  • We had a great first experience with Working for Wags! They came to our house to feed our two pups for several days while we were on vacation. Following their visits, they sent us updates by text and pictures by email, both which were greatly appreciated. They also helped us try to troubleshoot some odd behavior from our dogs, which turned out to be related to a smoke alarm that required battery replacement and was scaring the pups. Overall, we had a very positive experience and will definitely use Working for Wags again when we are out of town. :-)

  • Angela did such an awesome job with our dogs! This was the first time we have left our dogs in a very long time due to 2 of the 3 being elderly and needing extra care. Angela was very attentive to their needs. We never had to worry about how they were doing because she would send updates via texts with pictures several times a day. Angela also brought up the mail and took care of garbage. I think the house was cleaner when we came home than when we left. I would not hesitate to have Angela back to watch out furry babies.
