Holiday Safety Tips for Pets

The holiday season is a time where we come together to celebrate and make special memories with our friends, family, and loved ones. Since we love our best fur-riends as much as family, it only makes sense that they’re a part of the celebration! However, it’s an important time to keep their safety in mind. With so much excitement, company, decorations, and more this time of year, your cats and dogs need extra attention and care to stay safe.

Here are some of our best safety tips to start with:

1. Keep human food away from your pet– and ensure your guests do the same.

There are so many holiday treats that may be toxic to your pets, including items like turkey, chocolate, grapes, onions, and more. To be safe, don’t treat your pet to any human food and ensure that your guests also follow this rule.

2. Don’t leave your pet alone with holiday plants, candles, potpourri, your tree, or any decorations they can reach, especially those including lights.

These items can quickly become hazards not only for your dog, but potentially to you and your family as well. It’s important to watch your pets around the new items in your home, in general.

3. Secure your tree to ensure it won’t fall over.

Cats and dogs are sometimes just as excited to check out your presents as you are. By securing your tree, you can help ensure that if they bump into it, it won’t fall and become a hazard for you or them.

4. Clear your trash away quickly and keep it out of reach from your pets.

Your trash may be full of human food and holiday treats that may make them sick or worse. Plus, some pets are drawn to discarded decor or gift wrapping and it’s best to ensure they won’t chew on or eat any of this.

5. No matter how friendly your pet is, you should provide them with a safe space to escape the excitement.

This can be their kennel, a crate, or a quiet corner or room just for them. This opportunity to enter a calm environment will help them feel more comfortable while you have company.

6. If your cat or dog is easily excitable, scared, or aggressive, then it’s best to let them relax separately from your guests. Make a quiet space for them in another room, or a section off part of your home. Make sure they have everything they’ll need, including a place to lay down, some toys, and plenty of water.

No matter how you’re spending your holiday season, you should take extra measures to ensure your pet is kept safe. Following this guidance can help you avoid potential emergencies, but you should also watch out for other potential dangers. The best way to ensure your pet is kept safe this season is by keep a close watch on them.

  • I'd give them 10 stars if I could! The sitters are wonderful!! They are true animal lovers, and I trust them fully. One of my dogs has epilepsy, so finding sitters comfortable with the risk of a seizure can be tough. But, they came fully prepared and knowledgeable about what to do. If you love your dogs like I do, I highly recommend them!! 🐕💙

  • I recommend 100% the service provided by Working For Wags. I found my 16-year-old cat well and relaxed when I returned from vacation. Frankie made it easy to arrange for someone responsible to attend to all his needs with lots of TLC. I received texts and pictures daily. I would hear back quickly if I had questions or needed to change some of the instructions already given. All my gratitude for their outstanding care.

  • We had a great first experience with Working for Wags! They came to our house to feed our two pups for several days while we were on vacation. Following their visits, they sent us updates by text and pictures by email, both which were greatly appreciated. They also helped us try to troubleshoot some odd behavior from our dogs, which turned out to be related to a smoke alarm that required battery replacement and was scaring the pups. Overall, we had a very positive experience and will definitely use Working for Wags again when we are out of town. :-)
